Running OpenSUSE 10.2 as a VMWare Guest
I downloaded the 10.2 version (DVD image) of OpenSUSE just to see what it was like. I quickly created a blank 20GB virtual machine for it to install into. And then it all came to a halt. After a ton of searching, I discovered that the secret was to type “nomce” as the lone boot option before selecting “Install” from the menu. Once I did that, it installed without any problems.
As for OpenSUSE itself. It was interesting seeing such a different take on an install process compared to Ubuntu (now that I have done so many installs). I have only played with it for a few minutes but I found it interesting that Python 2.5 was the default version installed. I also couldn’t immediately figure out how you’re supposed to install something like wxpython on there. I’m thinking Ubuntu has me pretty spoiled. But I still think it’s appropriate to give OpenSUSE a look.

I’ve been trying to find the magic spell to install SuSE 10.2 on VMWare for days now. The “nomce” is spot on - thank’s so much for it. I’m surprised it’s so hard to find out about.
Here’s my notes that i made as i installed suse.
Install using the text mode installer. In the first installation screen, press the F3 key to get boot options.
Press the F3 key again and use the arrow keys to select text mode, and then press Enter to select the text
mode installer.
(This is to fix the DVD Reading issue - No Software displayed)
Abort the installation and load
Select Load File System Modules
Select UDF
Select OK
Restart Installation
Be sure to install gcc and the kernel source so the VMware Tools installer can compile modules for SUSE
Linux 10.
At the Installation Settings screen, choose Change, and then choose Software. From the Filter menu,
choose RPM Groups. Choose the Development group, press Enter to open it, and add gcc, gcc–c++, and
kernel–source by highlighting those items in the list and pressing the spacebar.
Ensure you change the bootloader from GRUB to LILO - GRUB SUCKS too 4 reloads and no joy - Good old LILO came through!
Select Change, Select Booting, at the top select Boot loader Installation
Under Type select LILO
(NB YOU HAVE TO BE IN EXPERT MODE TO CHANGE THE BOOTING)
At the Test Internet Connection screen.during final configuration, after all packages are installed.do
not perform the Internet connection test.
Follow the remaining installation steps as you would for a physical machine.
This completes basic installation of the SUSE LINUX 10.1 guest operating system.
